Match Report: Wilmslow vs Old Anselmians – 24 Jan

Great turn out for the first match of 2010.  We had 16 players turn up.  Bit of a shame we didn’t have 18 as we could have put out two teams, but for a match so far from home in the cold and wet it was a great squad.
The warm up concentrated on keeping warm, passing and positions.  We are really putting the ruck and maul to good use in our game, but we need to expliot the spaces more with quick passing.
We agreed to play 4 quarters against their single team, and we put pressure on them each and every period.  Some really great tackling and tight play again from Wilmslow saw an early try from Ten who found lots of space to run into.
It was clear that the Saints were having trouble breaking through our defence, but at the same time we missed opportunties by not passing into space.
The pitch really churred up, but I was glad to see quick running still a big part of out game.
The big issue as is often the case is making sure we are all warm all the time.  Even though the temperature was 5 degrees.  With such a wet pitch wet hands become cold very quickly.  The only answer is lots and lots of layers.  As the body core ‘overheats’ the warm blood pumps to the hands…let’s see lots of layers next week everybody.
Final outcome, 5 tries to us.  One to them.  Well done everybody.
